有些定语从句和先行词的关系不紧密,表达的不是定语内容,而是状语的意义,相当于某种状语从句。如下句:
Finally the Spanish king and queen,who were interested in finding a sea route to India,offered him ships and men so that he could carry out his plan.
最后,还是因为西班牙国王和王后想寻找一条通往印度的海路,才给了他船只和水手,使他的计划能得以实施。
很显然,此句中的非限制性定语从句起到了原因状语的作用。因此,在阅读或翻译的过程中,遇到类似的句子,我们应注意定语从句所具有的状语意义。一般来说,翻译时,我们可以加上“因为”、“因此”、“以便”、“如果”、“虽然”等词,译成汉语中相应的偏正复句。了解并熟识这种定语从句的含义和译法,对提高阅读理解和翻译能力是很有益处的。
现将含有原因、结果、目的、条件、让步、对比、时间、递进等意义的定语从句分述如下。
一、译成原因状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有说明主句原因的含义,在翻译时可以加上汉语表示原因关系的词语,如“因为”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.A transformer cannot operate on direct current,which(=because direct current)would burn out the winding in it.
变压器不能通直流电,因为直流电会烧坏变压器的线圈。
2.Reaction is often reduced by the formation of a thin oxide film which(=because a thin oxide film)limits access of oxygen,water,vapor and other gases.
由于氧化薄膜阻止氧气、水蒸气和其它气体的进入,反应常因形成氧化薄膜而减弱。
二、译成结果状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有说明主句结果的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示结果关系的词语,如“因此”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.Matter has certain features or properties that enable us to recognize it easily.(that引导的定语从句=therefore,they enable us to recognize it easily)
物质具有一定的特征或特性,因此能使我们很容易识别各种物质。
2.There was something original,independent,and heroic about the plan that pleased all of them.(that引导的定语从句=so that it pleased all of them)
这个方案富于创造性,独出心裁,并且很有魄力,所以他们都很喜欢。
三、译成目的状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句目的的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示目的关系的词语,如“为了”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.The generator is producing electricity,which(=so that electricity)is used for lighting.
这台发电机正在发电,发出的电是用来照明的。
2.We have to oil the moving parts of the machine,the friction of which(=so that its friction)may be greatly reduced.
我们必须给机器的传动部分加油,以便使磨擦大大地减少。
四、译成条件状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句条件的含义,在翻译时可以加上汉语表示条件关系的词语,如“如果”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.Pieces of iron which(=if they)are left in the rain become rusty.
铁片如果被扔在雨里就会生锈。
2.Food which(=if it)is kept too long decays because it is attacked by yeasts,moulds and bacteria.
食物如果存放得太久就会因为受到酵母菌、霉菌和细菌的侵袭而腐败。
五、译成让步状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句让步的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示让步关系的词语,如“虽然”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.He insisted on building another house,which he had no use for.(although he had no use for it)
他坚持要再建一座房子,尽管他并不需要。
2.The factory,which(=though the factory)is small,produces a large quantity of machines every day.
工厂虽小,但它每天都生产出大量的机器。
六、译成转折状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句转折的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示转折关系的词语,如“但是”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
1.A polished surface reflects more heat than a dull surface,which(=while a dull surface)absorbs more heat than a polished surface.
抛光表面比无光泽表面反射的热量多,而无光泽表面比抛光表面吸收的热量多。
2.Trams,which disappeared from Britain many years ago,are still used in several European cities.(=Trams disappeared from Bratain many years ago,but they are still used in several European cities.)
有轨电车多年前就在英国销声匿迹了,现在欧共体洲大陆上有几个城市却还在使用。
七、译成时间状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句时间的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示时间顺序关系的词语,并转译成汉语相应的从句,(定语从句表示的动作和主句的动作同时发生)可译为“当……的时候”。
1.An electrical current begins to flow through coil,which(=when the coil)is connected across a charged condenser.
当线圈同充电的电容器相连接时,电流就开始流经线圈。
2.A sailor who was fixing a rope lost his balance and tumbled overboard.(=A sailor lost his balance and tumbled overboard when he was fixing a rope.)
一个水手在固定绳子的时候失去了平衡,跌到水里去了。
八、译成递进状语从句
英语的定语从句如果在意义上具有表明主句递进的含义,我们在翻译时可以加上汉语表示递进关系的词语,如“而且”等词,并转译成汉语相应的从句。
The fact that the new alliance was locally generated and sustained should be a strong inducement to the US whose interests already dictate such support.
新联盟是在当地形成并且得到了当地政府的有力扶持,这一情况对于美国来说应该具有很大的诱惑力,更何况美国自身的利益也要求它对新联盟给予支持。
由此看来,翻译时我们首先应摆脱英语形式的束缚,把握其各个部分含义的内在关系,对定语从句的外在形式进行重组,判断主、从句的逻辑关系,然后再按照汉语的行文习惯,将转换成适当的状语从句形式翻译。
