As one of the four national libraries of the United States and one of the most important libraries worldwide, the Library of Congress has a long history of more than 200 years, playing an important role in American culture.
At present, the library boasts over 100 million copies of books, the total length of its shelves exceeding 800 kilometers. It has such collections as pottery writing boards of ancient Iraq, a map bearing the first use of the name“America”, the violin made by Antonio Stradivari, film copies produced over 100 years ago, and the up-to-the-minute hip hop music recordings.
Among the most popular exhibits, there is a set of belongings President Lincoln carried on the very night of his assassination at Ford’s Theatre: a pair of glasses, some notes and newspaper clippings. However, one day in 2007, a librarian said to James H. Billington, the librarian of the Library of Congress, that some books were so profound that nobody had borrowed them.
Dr. Billington was appointed as the 13th librarian of the Library of Congress in 1987 and has been working there ever since. As a wise scholar, he pondered for a second and said that he would seek a way to solve the problem.
The next day, Librarian Billington asked his librarians to collect those books that nobody had borrowed and place them in a conspicuous position. And then, a board was put on the books, “A note of caution: these books are very difficult to read. Only very learned people understand them.”
Thus very soon, those books in which nobody had showed any interest for a long time were all borrowed.
Now, on a side marble wall of the Thomas Jefferson Building Librarian Billington’s name is engraved together with those of his 12 predecessors, to which visitors pay respect.
