　　Informatization is integral to modern industrial development. Transitioning to an information-based economy makes manufacturing more efficient, green, and sophisticated. It has provided infrastructure with computerized numerical control (CNC) and sped the transition towards flexible and customized manufacturing. Last but not least, improving information technology has the potential to generate substantial changes to industrial manufacturing methods and improve industries’competitive performance.
　　Historically, information asymmetry has been part and parcel of commerce. The buyer never knows more than the seller, firms do not reveal proprietary information to either consumers or competitors, and everyone seeks to preserve their competitive advantage. As applications of information technology increase, traditional barriers to information fall away. Today, consumers can access a wealth of information about manufacturing processes, technologies, and even supply chains over the Internet. Manufacturers, too, have an increased incentive to disclose information about their products. In other words, access to information, in contradistinction to previous generations of commerce, is now a key element of corporate competitiveness. As some firms begin to disclose information, others feel obliged to do the same, moving corporate competition towards transparency and openness.
　　Access to information has brought the behavior of firms under intense scrutiny. As a result, those who engage actively in fulfilling social responsibilities will gain public recognition and build their brand’s reputation. Those who lack or fail to publicize their “corporate citizenship” or commitment to social good are destined to be marginalized. In today’s IT-based society, corporations compete in a market where transparency overrides secrecy.
　　In the final analysis, industrialization mirrors human progress and civilization. Early stages of industrialization still have cruel and predatory features, such as wanton environmental abuse, but as industry progresses and evolves, firms begin to embrace efficient, clean, and safe development. In fact, firms are beginning to recognize that this kind of development is no longer merely an externality to be reconciled but an industry in and of itself. Today’s industries convert waste into resources and energy or manufacture goods that raise living standards. Today’s industrial society is an era where people can expect to live longer, healthier, and happier lives than ever before. Informatization is the key to this transition: increasing IT applications will help ease information asymmetry and shine light into the black box of corporate behavior. As mankind enters this advanced stage of industrialization, the trend will be increasingly towards disclosure, openness, and humanity, removing the veil over the cruel and predatory behaviors of the past.
