    个人称述

I have been interested in computer and network technologies since I was little. Influenced by my technology-savvy parents, I learned about using a computer from my mother, who is an electrical engineer of State Grid of China, and knew computer networks from my father, who is the chief engineer of a telecomm company in charge of managing optical fiber backbones. I have invested significant amount of time and energy in courses like math, physics, and computer programming, which are foundations to computer and network technologies.

My passion for network technologies was further enhanced by my experience in a national-wide project by the Chinese government, which aimed at connecting every Chinese village to the Internet. As a young volunteer, I joined a team with four members to investigate technology use in 11 villages in Shanxi Province, China. Learning about the needs of village farmers, we set up computers and networks and taught them how to use computers and how to obtain information they needed on the Internet. My experience in this project is very rewarding, because I had opportunities to get my hands on projects that could have great impacts on the real world. From a survey deployed one and a half years after our project was completed, I have learned that three of the 11 villages we worked had seen their incomes increased by more than 20%. The increases were largely because of the farming skills that the farmers in

these villages acquired from the Net Academy of Agriculture of China through the Internet. I was deeply moved by the result of this project, and realized the power of the Internet in minimizing the gap between urban and rural areas in China. Thus, I decided to study electronic engineering to know more about networking and Internet technologies.

I have earned a bachelor degree in electronic engineering from Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai. The University provided me with an excellent learning environment to strengthen my foundations in such areas as mathematics, computer science, and telecommunication systems. When I was a junior, I found a lot of students complaining the slow network throughput they had in their dorms in a college forum. Its speed was so slow that subscribers hardly open a webpage, sometimes. Interested in this problem, I deployed software, which name is Cacti, on our school network to monitor and collect traffic information. Meanwhile I made a survey of two hundred people to analyze their web habits, by which I realized that usage of P2P applications and ARP attack may lead to network congestion. With respective solutions, the problem is solved.

In college, I also took as many and diverse courses as possible to broaden my knowledge base. Owing to my persistent efforts, I ranked top 10 with a GPA of 3.5 in my department. Four years of study in the university not

only strengthened my original ambition to become an expert in network technologies, but also reinforced my belief that a primitive impulse does not lead to success unless a sustained effort is made.

My career goal is to become a network expert, who wills both advance worlds’ research on network topics by conducting laboratory studies and make innovations in industry. So I joined the China Mobile Communications Corporation, Shanxi Branch, the biggest operator in our country. Early on, I was an engineer in the Department of Institutional Clients. This position gave me a good opportunity to understand the business of mobile communications and the needs of our institutional clients. I worked closely with my clients, listened to their needs, and developed solutions for them.

In 2013, I was transferred to the Department of Network, where I can better use my knowledge in practical projects and learn more cutting-edge technologies. The team I am working manages and maintains a metropolitan area network (MAN), which consists of almost 500 switches, and two dozens of routers. I am fully immersed into the challenging tasks in managing a MAN, which usually cannot be interrupted for even a second. The MAN I am dealing with connects the major economic stakeholders of the city, including banks, police stations,

and hospitals. Hundreds of people rely on the network for their work and life. I have helped many clients to improve their networking connections by optimizing their LAN structure and routed strategies and expanding their network capacity.

In addition to help clients on their concrete problems, I also took initiative to address issues on the side of network service providers. To enhance the efficiency of the network, I proposed a project to optimize its convergence layer. Approved by my manager, I tested an approach to using packet transport network (PTN) to decrease the level of convergence and to expand the network capacity. By monitoring and collecting network traffic data of more than 70 high-volume switches for two weeks, I designed a plan that involves building PTN circuits with appropriate bandwidths and optimized structures of switches. Because of the potential impact on our clients, I implemented the plan in different phases and deployed the changes little by little in midnights. Currently, the project goes smoothly and the improvement of network efficiency is measurable. I expect the whole project to be completed early next year.

It is a rewarding experience to work as a network engineer, but I also feel the pressure to update my knowledge. Networking is an area moving

with a very fast speed. I need to learn more about theories and new developments in this area. Thus, it is natural for me to think about pursuing a graduate degree in the United State, where we can find the most dynamic and exciting network technologies. I choose your program of xxxx because of the world-class faculty and the rigorous curricular. I believe that your program will prepare me with the best academic training in the networking technologies.
