The Informal Economy in the Era of Information Revolution and Globalization： The Shanzhai Cell Abstract: The shanxhai (山寨) cellphone phenomenon reveals the profoundeconomic transformations of our time. First, information revolution has madeproduction tools more accessible and has resulted in much wider participation inproduction. Supported by the dee.pened division of labor through theservicization of production, shanzhai cellphone companies are able to expandthe Wintel production regime sustained by value chain into a hypotheticalenterprise with a multi-divisional structure. Second, globalization has linkedmany scattered long-tail markets together. This has enabled the long-tailproducts, which were hardly profitable in the era of mass production, toaccomplish the economy of scale. Third, the Chinese innovation of the spatialoverlap between an industrial cluster and specialized markets has provided anintrinsic mechanism of industrial expansion: the competition pressures resultedfrom the spatial concentration of small producers in the industrial cluster forcethem to differentiate their products which in turn promotes the economy ofscope, while the big flows of merchants coming to the specialized marketssustained by the economy of scope help create the economy of scale for thehighly individualized long-tail products.
