     1. Some parents buy their children whatever they ask for, and allow their children to do whatever they want. Is this a good way to raise children? What consequences could this style of parenting have for children as they get older? It is true that some parents are overly permissive and tend to spoil their children. In my opinion, this is not a good parenting style, and it can have a range of negative long-term consequences. If parents want to raise respectful and well-behaved children, I believe that a certain amount of discipline is necessary. Having worked with children myself, I have learnt that clear expectations and boundaries are necessary, and it is important to be able to say ‘no’ to children when they misbehave or try to push against these boundaries. This is the only way to help young people to regulate their desires and develop self-control. In my view, parents who do the opposite and constantly give in to their children’s demands, are actually doing more harm than good. They are failing their children rather than being kind to them. The children of indulgent or lenient parents are likely to grow up with several negative personality traits. The first and most obvious danger is that these children will become self-centered adults who show little consideration for the feelings or needs of others. One consequence of such an attitude could be that these adults are unable to work successfully in teams with other colleagues. A second negative trait in such people could be impulsiveness. A person who has never lived with any boundaries is likely to lack the patience to carefully consider options before making decisions. This may lead, for example, to compulsive shopping, unwise financial decisions, or even criminal activity. In conclusion, parents should help their children to develop self-control and respect for others, and I do not believe that the permissive parenting style supports this objective. 2. Some people believe that school children should not be given homework by their teachers, whereas others argue that homework plays an important role in the education of children. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion. People’s opinions differ as to whether or not school children should be given homework. While there are some strong arguments against the setting of homework, I still believe that it is a necessary aspect of education. There are several reasons why people might argue that homework is an unnecessary burden on children. Firstly, there is evidence to support the idea that homework does nothing to improve educational outcomes. Countries such as Finland, where school children are not given homework, regularly top international educational league tables and outperform nations where setting homework is the norm. Secondly, many parents would agree that the school day is already long enough, and leaves their children too

tired to do further study when they return home. Finally, it is recognised that play time is just as beneficial as study time from the perspective of brain development. In spite of the above arguments, I support the view that homework has an important role to play in the schooling of children. The main benefit of homework is that it encourages independent learning and problem solving, as children are challenged to work through tasks alone and at their own pace. In doing so, students must apply the knowledge that they have learnt in the classroom. For example, by doing mathematics exercises at home, students consolidate their understanding of the concepts taught by their teacher at school. In my view, it is important for children to develop an independent study habit because this prepares them to work alone as adults. In conclusion, homework certainly has its drawbacks, but I believe that the benefits outweigh them in the long term. 政府篇

     3. Some people think that any money spent by government in supporting artist (such as painters, musicians and writers) should be spent on more important things. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 环保篇

     4. Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste? It is true that we do not recycle enough of our household waste. Although I accept that new legislation to force people to recycle could help this situation, I do not agree that a recycling law is the only measure that governments should take. In my view, a new recycling law would be just one possible way to tackle the waste problem. Governments could make it a legal obligation for householders to separate all waste into different bins. There could be punishments for people who fail to adhere to this law, ranging from a small fine to community service, or even perhaps prison sentences for repeat offenders. These measures would act as a deterrent and encourage people to obey the recycling law. As a result, the improved behaviour of homeowners could lead to a clean, waste-free environment for everyone. However, I believe that governments should do more than simply introduce a recycling law. It might be more effective if politicians put education, rather than punishment, at the centre of a recycling campaign. For example, children could be taught about recycling in schools, and homeowners could be informed about the environmental impact of household waste. Another tactic that governments could use would be to create stricter regulations for the companies that produce the packaging for household products. Finally, money could also be spent to improve recycling

facilities and systems, so that waste is processed more effectively, regardless of whether or not people separate it correctly in the home. In conclusion, perhaps we do need to make recycling a legal requirement, but this would certainly not be the only way to encourage people to dispose of their waste more responsibly. 科技 篇

     5. Some universities now offer their courses on the Internet so that people can study online. Is this a positive or negative development?

It is true that online courses are becoming a common feature of university education. Although there are some drawbacks of Internet-based learning, I would argue that there are far more benefits.

The main drawback of the trend towards online university courses is that there is less direct interaction. Students may not have the opportunity to engage face-to-face communication with their teachers, and will instead have to rely on written forms of communication. Similarly, students who study online do not come into direct contact with each other, and this could have a negative impact on peer support, discussion and exchange of ideas. For example, whereas students on traditional courses can attend seminars and even discuss their subjects over coffee after lessons, online learners are restricted to chatting through website forum areas. These learners may also lack the motivation and element of competition that face-to-face group work brings.

Despite the negatives mentioned above, I believe that online university courses are a positive development for various reasons. Firstly, they allow learners to study in a flexible way, meaning that they can work whenever and wherever is convenient, and they can cover the material at their own pace. Secondly, the cost of a university education can be greatly reduced, while revenues for institutions may increase as more students can be taught. Finally, online learning offers open access to anybody who is willing to study, regardless of age, location, ability and background. For example, my uncle, who is 65 years old, has recently enrolled on an online MBA course in a different country, which would have been impossible in the days before Internet-based education.

In conclusion, while I recognise the possible disadvantages of online learning, I consider it to be a positive development overall.

     6. Some groups of people benefited from the modern communications technology but some people have not benefited at all. Do you agree or disagree?

The advent of telecommunication technology has revolutionized our work patterns and lifestyle. Despite the claim that one has never reaped benefit from this invention, others, as well as I, insist that it has made great contribution to humans more than one

     aspect.

In this information age, mobile technology makes a huge difference to people’s working style, thus enhancing their efficiency and productivity. With faster access to the digital reports from colleagues or superiors, staff are allowed to shorten/cut their time spent on insignificant things and therefore accomplish more tasks in the same given period. For example, instead of room-based conference in which people gathered and then allocate tasks one by one, an email to the target employ with full details of the assignments will do. The time saved can be applied for better use, like training to sharpen their skills or embarking on next project that has long been waiting on the to-do list.

Outside offices, this new technology also brings people closer with strong and lifelong relationship in their life even though the pursuit of career advancement, education attainment and other personal ambitions has scattered them in almost every possible corner of the world. The prosperity of social networking websites and APPs has witnessed the boom of interaction among friends, relatives and strangers. It is not uncommon now to share one"s life, for instance, adorable pets, memorable travels, or tasty home-made food on Twitter and INS. The comments and dialogues following these pictures and videos persuade people that they are never alienated from their beloved ones in spite of the geographic distance.

In conclusion, people have been benefitting from modern interaction technology both in their workplace and at home in different ways.

      7. Some people think the technology makes life complex, so we should make life simpler without using the technology. Agree or disagree?

The past decades have witnessed the technology boom and thus our lifestyle has been revolutionized. Despite all the benefits, technology complicates our life in many aspects. As a result, ceasing to use technology is believed to be the way to solve this problem. I,on the other hand, disagree with this statement.

There is no denying the fact that technology may have led to complexity in day-to-day life for both the elderly and the young. The former,as the major groups requiring immediate medical treatment, find making appointments on line quite challenging. This leaves them less chances to see doctors and more inconvenience compared with old days when all the patients are waiting outside the doctors" office with on one jumping the queue out of thin air. The latter also suffer from the side effect brought by technology because they have to constantly receive training and drilling to barely keep up with the frequent update of technology, like the widely-used CRM in the office.

In spite of the inconvenience and complexity, it is inadvisable to simplify our life through abandoning technology. Actually, the cure lies in the technology itself. With user-friendly instruction on the website, such as videos or radios, the aged can be spared from the troubles. As for the young people,it is highly likely that the technology may develop perfectly enough and need no more updates. Additionally, the usage of technology,if once stopped, would definitely bring more complex situation. For example, people have to spend months traveling across the Atlantic Ocean, which can be accomplished with airplanes in a matter of hours.

In conclusion,it is not sensible to get rid of technology for the complexity it brings. Instead,we should carry on developing to settle this problem.

     8. Somebody thinks job satisfaction is more important job security, while others hold the opposite views: job permanent is much more important Discuss both views and I give your own opinion.

In modern society, there has been a growing awareness among many people, especially the youth that undertaking a job which enables them to achieve satisfaction counts more. However, others advocate that it is wise to do one job as long as they can. It is understandable that people from different backgrounds put different interpretation on the same issue.

On one hand, there are several main reasons approving of the significance of job satisfaction. The first one is that employees are more likely to devote themselves in working . As is known to us, only when painters are fond of drawing can they create masterpieces, so does the job. Providing that staffs are discontented with salaries, regulations of companies or the bonus system, how could they spare no effort to dealing with tough problems arising from work.

In addition, it is obvious that self-motivation is not only beneficial for achieving personal potential, but also makes contributions to the increase of company’s profits. Since personnel are willing to tackle their tasks actively and timely, even do extra work voluntarily, the working efficiency has been drastically stimulated, in which case, there is no doubt that their employers could earn a large fortunate. In this scenario, the society may gain economic benefits from the boom of industries.

Conversely, those who prefer to do the same job maintain more advantages can be obtained, among which the relatively stable income and less competitiveness stress are the most pivotal. In pursuit of job satisfaction sometimes is at the risk of lacking money for meals or competing with thousands for one position or a deal. Besides, as

their working experience increases, it is more possible for them to acquire promotion or have their pay raised. What’s more, some enterprises provide special pension for lifelong workers as a reward for their loyalty.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, whether to pursue a permanent job or a satisfactory job depends on job seekers’ ambition. I also believe that people had better to do something that really interests them and regard it as a lifetime career to earn both reputation and wealth.

      9. An increasing number of people change their career and place of residence several times in their lives. Is it a positive or negative development?

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness among many people that shifting occupations and dwellings several times during their lifetime earns them a lot of benefits. However, if they are not prepared for problems airing from such practice, it would be a frustrating and fruitless experience.

There are at least two advantages of job-hopping and the first one is that job transition is deemed as a key to enrich working experience and skills. It is comprehensible that job hoppers have more chances to engage in various projects of different fields. In this way, more choices of job positions are available for them and they are equipped with competence in coping with challenges and risks. In addition, job changing is an effective way to explore one"s job prospect. Many job seekers are not clear of their professional path when undertaking the first job. Therefore, it is necessary for them to attempt diverse jobs until having a detailed plan for their career advance. As for merits of moving houses, enlarging the circle of friends may be the most obvious one. When living in a new apartment or community, it is more likely to make the acquaintance of neighbors.

However, it is a waste of time and money if people switch their residence too many times. As is known, tenants are bound to spend time viewing renting information online or newspaper, inspecting housing conditions as well as doing decoration and cleaning after moving into the new place. Apart from this, they have to pay the bill for the service of moving house. Similarly, frequent changing for job leads to the dislocation and instability. A case in the point is that HR manager may refuse to interview those who are used to working in one position only for a short period of time as the boss value the loyalty and integrity of his employees. Without stable work and income, hardly can they achieve the sense of general satisfaction with life.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, although the shift of job and living places brings advantages in advancing career and improving social life, it is still recommended that one should be mature enough in terms of mental development as well as stress management before making this decision.

     10. It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about the other culture. We can learn as much as from books, films and Internet. To what extent for you agree or disagree?

Such is human nature to explore the unknown and deepen our insight into exotic cultures. In comparison with feasting our eyes on gorgeous landscape in person, many people can get to know foreign countries by reading magazines, appreciating movies, or browsing eye-catching pictures on line, so a heated debate springs up as to whether being well-travelled is still the best way to enrich our knowledge about unfamiliar places. Personally, indirect way to deepen our understating about unfamiliar cities or foreign countries can never be superior to traveling in person.

So prevailing are movies, magazines and the Internet that few of us can avoid being swayed by them. It is true that people used to rely on direct tour for cultural exploration and visual enjoyment, now people have many more choices largely because of the availability of electronic media or printed books. To illustrate, Tourist is one of my favorite magazines, which usually gives a detailed introduction and vivid description on local conditions and customs of various countries. My insight into foreign countries has been greatly deepened by reading this wonderful tourism magazine.

What I want to rebut, however, is that indirect experience is definitely not the ideal one to enrich our experience of the world. First, traveling exposes us to new places and cultures. It is good for us to read about distant countries, but it is even better to visit our dream cities or nations in person. What we learn by meeting the people and absorbing the cultures of these places is something we could not learn simply by reading books, watching movies or browsing the Internet. Further, those who never travel to the outside world, usually, are rather restricted in terms of crisis-solving competence, decision-making ability and interpersonal skills even though they might get some indirect information from the mass media, conversely, those who spend time in exploring the world tend to be more well-informed, sharp-minded, sociable and tenacious. From our lives, it is easy to find out a lot of examples to prove that many people familiarize themselves with new countries and deepen their insight into different cultures by going abroad.

In conclusion, drawing on the electronic media or printed books might be a good approach to understand different places or countries, however, traveling in person deserves more praises in terms of broadening our mental horizons and enriching our experience of the world.

     11. In some countries, people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for

the country. What are the reasons for this? How to change these views?

Travelling abroad has become a new lifestyle nowadays. However, complaints about the potential negative effects of international travel have been sparked among the public in recent years. This essay will outline two main reasons for these complaints and provide certain measures to change the opinion.

First of all, it is a widespread phenomenon that foreign travelers might repel the local community because of their inappropriate languages and behavior in some resorts. Due to the cultural differences, visitors’ behavior may break traditional rules in travel destinations sometimes. For example, a visitor will annoy an Indian when he passes food by his left hand. For this reason, the local government can take actions to provide more specific travelling tips in popular scene spots for foreign travelers.

In addition, more and more transnational travels will cause damage to the unique nature of a culture. Foreign visitors will bring not only tangible matters like food and clothes but also something intangible, such as their festivals or customs. In other words, these visitors are assimilating their country’s culture while they are travelling abroad, which will be bound to cause antipathy in racist society. Germany is a case in point. For this reason, the government can encourage locals to hold a tolerant attitude toward foreign arrivals as they have no common knowledge of local conventions in most times. Travelling is for cultural communication instead of invasion.

In conclusion, breaking conventions and cultural uniqueness are the two main factors leading to the bias regarding international tourism. Both governments and individuals should make an effort to change this phenomenon.

      12. Many people do not feel safe either at home or they are out, and what can be done to make people feel safer?

Security is always a frequently talked topic in the modern society. Looking into the factors leading to dangers helps people to protect themselves from insecurity. This essay will mainly analyze the reasons for this problem and provide some solutions.

There are two main factors contributing to the phenomenon that more people feel insecure. In general, the detailed description of violence on the mass media should be responsible for this problem. When criminal cases such as shooting, theft and driving after drinking are often reported on the TV, the viewers" safety and security will probably be threatened and they will be in the belief that they are likely to be subject to offences at anytime. This problem can also be attributed to the widespread use of mobile devices. With more applications installed in people"s smart phones, they save too many secrets on this device--the online bank passwords and the information of

their social network which may include significant business opportunities. It is not exaggerated that their lives and property will be threatened if they lose their precious mobile devices.

To solve this problem, governments, police stations and citizens themselves should cooperate with each other. First of all, the government should impose a restriction on the representation of crimes, reducing the plots focusing on the detailed description. The governments and police stations need to set up a security system, through which citizens" personal information can be prevented from being stolen. It is also of great essence that citizens should raise the awareness of security.

As mentioned above, the occurrence of crime on the mass media and the storage of personal information on mobile devices are the main reasons for insecurity. Governments, police stations and citizens should make concerted efforts.

     13. Some people think that the main benefits of international cooperation is protection of the environment, but others think that the main benefit is the world business. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Globalization increases connections between different nations. There remains some disagreement as to whether international cooperation is beneficial for the protection of environment or the boom of world business. I would discuss both views as follows.

On the one hand, admittedly, environment deterioration poses a threat to human beings living on the earth. It is common to see haze in megacities of developing countries, the extinction of rare species in the Amazon rainforest as well as the melt of glaciers in Arctic. Although authorities in those areas aim at tackling environmental issues, the adopted technology and scientific researches fail to meet the demand. Only when the first-rate scientists around the world devote themselves to inventing environmental-friendly facilities and international environmental protection organizations make coordinated efforts, will the destruction of ecosystem be diminished and natural resources be conserved. In addition, environmental laws enacted in United Nations General Assembly not only regulate the greenhouse gas emission of its member states but also highlight the obligation to preserve biodiversity.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that world economy does be boosted by commodity circulation among countries. For example, Chinese people can earn large number of foreign currencies by exporting agricultural products and purchase high-tech electronic devices imported from Japan or Germany via signing relevant trade contracts with business partners. Besides, the international organization such as World Trade Organization clears barriers and guarantees the liberalization of world business. It implements policies of enforcing wealthy countries to eliminate tariffs on

items from poor countries and promotes multilateral trade negotiations.

As far as I am concerned, addressing environmental problems is the major benefit gained from co-operation between nations since they would share techniques and commit to keeping ecological balance in a certain area to ensure the healthy development of our planet. However, it seems that developed countries are deemed as the first beneficiaries of the world trade although international business has been stimulated.

交通篇 14. Many people suggest that the best way to solve traffic congestion is to free public transport. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Traffic jams have become a serious problem in people’s daily life, especially in some metropolis. While some people support the opinion that to free public transport can address this problem perfectly, I believe this is one but not the best way to ease traffic jams.

It is attractive if people have free access to public transport, especially for people who like to take petty advantages. However, if public transport like buses and subways are crowed and inconvenient, this policy is not likely to last for a long time. After a short time, people will turn to their private vehicle and the old situation continues. So other more radical measures should be taken to tackle this problem.

Instead of freeing public transport, investing in better public transport would be a better solution. As we know, increasing number of private vehicle is one of the primary reason leading to traffic congestion and people prefer the private vehicle mostly on account of its convenience and comfort. In this case, if people can reduce the time spent on the road to work and enjoy a joyful experience by taking buses or subways, definitely a great many people will choose the more efficient and environmentally friendly way—taking public transport, which can reduce the traffic volume at large extent.

Apart from this, upgrading the road system is another approach to relieve traffic congestion. With the development of economy, there are more and more vehicles on the road, exceeding the capacity of some roads, and as a result, this situation will give rise to traffic jams. So if road system is improved, this problem is more likely to be solved.

To sum up, from my point of view, freeing public transport is not a perfect choice and a range of other measures should be used together.

     15. Some countries achieve that international sporting. Some people think that people should be given right to use fresh water as they like. Others believe government should control toughly over the use of fresh water. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Fresh water, as one of the most valuable resources, sustains human life. Unfortunately, the problem of water shortage has confronted contemporary people so that some of them assert that it is a must to ensure the use of fresh water is under the strict control of government.

Due to the higher demand of water for industrial manufacture, daily life, as well as the destruction of water-depended ecosystem, fresh water which is theoretically deemed as the renewable natural resource tends to run out one day. What’s worse, the abusive use of water is common to see in the farmland, factory and household. Supposing that government takes no actions to deter this water crisis, what would happen in the future? Would human being be able to use water as they like? In order to combat the deteriorating situation, it is believed the authority is supposed to regulate the maximum quantity of water consumption in industrial production; adopt high-technology aimed at recycling used water in farmland.

On the other hand, it is fair to say people do have the right to use fresh water as they want. The main reason lies in that the restriction of water use might lead to poor sanitary conditions and the spread of diseases. In addition, it lowers people’s living standards and causes a lot of inconvenience. For instance, showers are only available in certain two hours of a day; flowers can only be watered once a week.

From my perspective, although the budget for advancing water-saving technique aggravates government’s financial burden, it is their obligation to tackle the issue. Apart from the measures to control the consumption of fresh water, large-scale educational campaigns should be held to instill the awareness of saving water in public.

     16. In many cities the use of video cameras in public places is being increased in order to reduce crime, but some people believe that these measures restrict our individual freedom. Do the benefits of increased security outweigh the drawbacks? It is true that video surveillance has become commonplace in many cities in recent years. While I understand that critics may see this as an invasion of privacy, I believe that the benefits do outweigh the drawbacks.

There are two main reasons why people might disapprove of the use of video cameras in public places. The first objection is that these cameras invade our privacy, in the sense that we are constantly being watched by the authorities or by private security firms. Many people find this intrusive and feel that the recording of their movements is a form of state control that curtails their individual freedom. The second argument against the proliferation of CCTV cameras is that they are being used as an alternative to police officers patrolling the streets. If this is indeed happening, then it is unlikely that members of the public will feel safer. In spite of the drawbacks mentioned above, I believe that the use of video cameras to monitor public areas is a positive measure. The key objective of video surveillance is to deter criminals and to prevent crime. For example, petty criminals like shoplifters and pickpockets are less likely to operate in parts of cities where they know that they are being watched. At the same time, when crimes are committed, the police can use video evidence to catch and prosecute offenders. Therefore, in my view, video cameras offer valuable support to police officers, and they make cities safer for inhabitants, workers and visitors alike. In conclusion, it seems to me that we gain more than we lose from the enhanced security that CCTV cameras bring to our cities.

In some countries, more and more adults are continuing to live with their parents even after they have completed education and found jobs. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Nowadays, an increasing number of adults choose to live with their parents after finishing their academic tasks and finding jobs. The overall effect of this phenomenon is negative, although the younger generation can get much help from their parents.

It is widely acknowledged that living with parents contributes to relieve young adults’ strains and stresses. They bear great pressure from their work and study, and are not willing to adapt to an independent life. The parents, especially the retired adults, are always ready to prepare everything for their children, helping them to concentrate on their work. In addition, young people can learn much experience from their parents who are more experienced in dealing with interpersonal relationships and career development. As a new comer in the working arena, the young generation are too naïve to manage their various challenges. Undoubtedly, it is of great value for them to live with their parents.
