Sun Yang (China) 孙杨(中国) Swimming Age: 20 China’s answer to Michael Phelps, Sun Yang promises to be one of the stars of the pool this summer. At the 2011 World Championships he took gold in the 800m and the 1500m, in the latter breaking the longest-standing world record in the sport, set by Grant Hackett a decade ago. He has spent time refining[改进] his technique[技术] with Hackett’s former[以前的] coach Denis Cotterell in Australia. Over the longer distances, it is hard to see who can stop him.

The world junior champion beat Korea’s Kang Ji-wook to become the first European player to hold the title. He could cause a surprise or two in London.

At 6’1” and with US size 13 feet, she has the perfect body for swimming. It is hard to tell just how good she might become—last year she became the first woman to break a world record, in the 200m short-course[短池] backstroke[仰泳], since plastic super-suits were banned in 2010. She could be looking at five or six medals in London.

The most compelling[引人注目的] races in the pool in 2012 will feature Michael Phelps versus Ryan Lochte. Phelps is the greatest swimmer in the history of the pool, but Lochte is looking to make his mark on history this summer. Lochte was the star of the World Championships last summer, winning five golds and beating Phelps in the final of the 200m freestyle and the 200m medley[混合泳]. In the latter he broke the world record. A new swimming superstar could well be born this summer.

Italy might be fencing’s spiritual home, and the country most likely to dominate[占优势] the medals this summer, but it is China who may have the most exciting talent. Sun Yujie is already firmly established[确立的] in the national team, having collected the silver medal at the World Fencing Championships, where she lost in the final to her fellow countrywoman Li Na. Yujie, who topped the world rankings last year, appears to be coming into form at just the right time in both the individual and team epee[重剑] events.

Still only 20, Laura Trott is already a double World Championship gold medalist[奖牌获得者] in the team pursuit[团体追逐赛], and also took the world omnium[自行车综合赛] title in Melbourne. Set to become one of cycling’s biggest names during London 2012, Trott is fast and aggressive[有闯劲的]. She originally experimented[试验] with swimming and cycling when her mother was trying to get fit and lose weight. She once claimed she did not enjoy cycling but very quickly became addicted[上了瘾的] to winning, something she has been doing a lot of just recently.
