大学英语四、六级考试中适当测试语法要点的必要性和可行性:大学英语口语六级考试

在现行的大学英语四、六级考试中取消了单项的语法知识的考试，这是无可非议的，因为单项语法知识考试不利于培养学生的实际使用语言的能力。但是，在现行的考试题型中适当插入英语语法要点的考试，我们认为是必要的，也是可行的。
一、必要性
我国早教专家冯德全教授指出：我国的外语教学一般从初中或小学三年级开始，极不合理，因为这时已经错过了语言发展最佳时期，这样学习外语自然会事倍功半甚至劳而无功。他主张孩子学习外语要与学母语同时进行，这样才能真正培养出合格的外语人才。
那么，根据我国外语教学的模式，能否培养出好的外语人才呢？答案当然是肯定的，但过程要艰难得多。首先一条是，错过语言学习最佳时间的人，要学好一门外语必须借助于该外语的基础语法知识，如果让孩子像学母语一样学外语，那根本不需要专门学习语法知识，就会像学会母语一样逐渐学会一门外语。进入高校学习的学生都是成年人，成年人学习外语更需要借助于语法才能把外语学好，因为成人有时要靠语法知识才能去理解、掌握学过的知识。
我们发现，在大学里英语学得比较好的学生，一般英语语法基础都比较好。这就是说，英语语法知识在帮助他们学好英语方面起着很重要的作用。大学英语四、六级考试是一根指挥棒，如果考试中完全不涉及英语语法要点的测试，这会对学生真正学好英语没有好处。在现行题型中适当测试英语语法要点可以引导学生学以致用，靠语法的反拨作用，更好地在实践中使用英语。
大学英语四、六级考试中适当测试语法要点可以引导学生正确地理解英语原文，提高英语水平。有的时候如果对原文的语法结构不能正确理解，就无法真正理解原文的意思，如：You would have seen the magnificent scene of the lake had you reached peak of the hill./We will not accept your offer provided you reduce the price by 10%./The law will come into effect the minute it is promulgated.这几个句子非常简单，但如果学生没有英语复合句的知识，就很难理解这几句话的意思。再如：Using noninvasive brain-scanning equipment that provides a window on the brain，clearly showing which brain areas are being used，scientists are gleaning insights into the parts of our brains that produce our conscious selves.如果不从语法角度理清该句中几个V-ing词组的功能和意义，以及几个从句和相关被修饰语的关系，就很难理解作者要表达的意思。因此，离开一定的语法分析，有时不大可能正确理解文章的意思，提高学生语言的运用能力便成了一句空话。
大学英语四、六级考试中适当测试语法要点对于语法基础比较差而影响口笔语交际的学生来说是一种促进，让他们打好必要的语言基本功，树立信心，学好英语，使他们能用英语更好地为交际服务。
二、可行性
就现行的考试题型是否可以适当测试英语语法要点呢？我们认为两者适当兼顾是完全可以的，各种题型中都可以适当插入对语法要点知识的测试，现拟就各种题型分别说明。
1.阅读理解题
在现行的英语四、六级考试中，阅读理解分略读和细读两种，就最近的两次考试看，两种阅读理解的测试形式基本上差不多，即主要是多项选择题。在设计多项选择题时可以设计需通过适当的语法分析才能正确理解文章内容的题目，如：As a proverb goes“It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest”.试题：The old saying means______________.A.An ill bird fouls its own nest. B.A bird that is ill fouls its own nest. C.A bird that fouls its nest is ill D.No matter how bad a bird is，it never fouls its nest.答案：D。要理解这个谚语的意思，就必须知道其语法结构，其实这是一个约定俗成式关系分句，句子实际意思相当于一个含让步状语分句的复合句，原句的意思是：再不好的鸟（鸡）也不会糟蹋自己的窝的。意即，家丑不可外扬。再如：Obese women are at nearly twice the risk for developing breast cancer，and all obese people have an estimated 42 percent higher chances of developing colon cancer.试题：There are________who have the risk to develop breast cancer as non-obese women.A.twice as many obese women B.as twice as many woman C.twice more women D.the number of women答案：A。根据英语语法关于倍数的表示法，答案应该A。这里既测试了对原文内容的理解，又涉及了语法问题，两者有机地联系起来了。
2.选词填空题
大学四级考试中的选词题空题，即Reading Comprehension（Reading in Depth）中的Section A，这种试题也可以与测试语法要点结合起来，如：I attended junior and senior high school，public institutions in New York and New Jersey，just after the Second World War.It 1 a long time ago.The facilities and the skills of the teachers were 2 well above average for the United States at the time.Since then，I’ve learned a great deal.One of the 3 important things I’ve learned is how much there is to learn，and how much I don’t know.Sometimes I think how 4 I would be today if I had learned more back then about 5 really matters. 待选词：A.gratefulB.happenC.seemsD.mostlyE.thatD.whatF.probablyG.most答案：1.C2.F3.G4.A5.D。
该题所需答案都与英语语法有点关系，1.seems涉及时态；2.probably修饰形容词的副词修饰语；3.most形容词最高级；4.grateful表语形容词；5.what介词宾语从句的引导词。
3.完型填空题
完型填空题是最应该与测试语法要点结合的试题，现行的大学四、六级不单独测试英语语法结构，但不等于完全不测试语法要点，语法要点的测试可体现在完型填空题中。如：Margaret Sanger， 1 ，was the first to start the modern birth control movement in the United States. 这里的待选答案与测试语法要点紧密结合，分别测试：1.同位语；2.时态与动名词；3.介词习惯搭配；4.动词时态；5.分词介词；6.时态和动词不定式。
完型填空是一种综合知识的测试题型，适当结合测试语法要点，无论对于考查学生英语的整体水平还是促进学生的英语学习都是大有裨益的。
4.改错题
大学英语六级考试有时采用改错题，一行英语句子中设计一个错误，要求学生辨认并改正错误，这种题型也可以与测试语法要点结合起来。例如：
The view of time affect the importance we attach to patience.In the American system of values，patience is not a highly priority.Many of us have what might be called“a short fuse”.We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return――is this in terms of pleasure，work value，or rest.Those come from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustment in both business and daily life.

句子中几个错误的地方都与英语语法有关，涉及考点分别为：1.单数第三人称；2.名词的修饰语；3.虚拟语气；4.现在分词；5.one of与复数名词连用。
设计改错题很容易把测试语法要点结合进去，出题目时除了要考虑用词、词组、常用句型、习惯搭配等外，把语法要点考虑进去时是非常必要的。
5.翻译题
现行大学四、六级英语考试中的翻译题都是汉译英，而且都是以要求完成句子的形式出现的。我们觉得这种题型也非常适合结合测试英语语法要点，如：It is proposed that（ 商品交易会推迟到下个月举行。）答案：...the commodity fair（should）be postponed until next month.该句测试的是一个虚拟语气的问题，主句中出现propose这一类动词，从句中要用虚拟语气。再如：By the end of next month，（这条大桥已经建成通车了。）答案：...the great bridge will have been completed and open to traffic.该句测试的是动词时态问题，时间状语为by the end of next month时，句子要用将来完成时。
学生应该掌握的英语语法要点很多，都可以结合大学四、六级考试中的翻译题来进行测试。这样不但能测试学生的翻译能力，而且能测试学生在实践中运用所学的语法知识正确进行语言表达的能力。
总之，在现行的大学英语四、六级考试中适当对英语语法要点进行测试是必要的，也是完全可能的。这里需要指出的是，对语法要点的测试不是为了测试而测试，而是自然地将其结合到试题中去，从而达到测试学生真实使用英语语言的能力。涉及英语语法的题目不宜过多，尤其是像阅读理解这样的试题，否则会顾此失彼，影响试卷的信度、效度和难易度，影响测试效果。
