英语中，有许多比较形式没有比较意义。在学习中我们常用到以下九种： 1.more than 1)后接名词，意为“不仅、不只”。例如： He is more than a teacher to me.He treats me like my father. 他不仅仅是我的老师。他像我父亲一样待我。
My trip to Beijing is more than sightseeing. 我的北京之行不仅仅是旅行。
2)后接形容词、副词，意为“非常”。例如：
The store is more than happy to deliver goods to your home. 本商店很乐意为您送货上门。
She is dressed more than simply. 她的穿着非常朴素。
3)后接含can 的从句，意为“到了不……的地步、（使）……难以……”。例如：
Her impoliteness is more than we can stand. 她的无礼使我们难以忍受。
The beauty of the place is more than I can describe. 这个地方的美我真是难以描述。
4)和谓语动词连用，意为“非常”。例如：
His answer more than satisfied me. 他的回答令我非常满意。
2.more...than
连接两个相同成分，意为“与其说……不如说……” ,是否定一个而肯定另一个的结构，连接的成分可以是形容词、名词、动词等。例如：
Don’t be too hard on him.He is more misled than stupid.不要对他太苛刻，与其说他愚蠢，倒不如说他被误导了。
He was more frightened than hurt. 与其说他受到了伤害不如说是受到了惊吓。
3.no more than和no more...than
1) no more than
a. no more than后接名词、数词，在句子中起形容词的作用，意为“仅仅、只不过”。例如：
This is no more than a joke. 这只不过是一个笑话。
This pipe is no more than ten feet long. 这管子只不过十英尺长。
b. (某物)正是（需要的或合适的）。例如：
It is no more than you deserve.这完全是你该得到的。
2)no more...than 意为“和……一样不”。例如：
The greatness of a people is no more determined by their number than the greatness of a man is determined by his height. 一个民族的伟大不取决于其人数的多少，正如一个人的伟大不取决于他的身高。
He is no more fit to live by himself than a threeyearold child would he. 他和一个两岁小孩一样生活无法自理。
4.no less than
1)意为“多大、有…… 之多”（=as many/much as）。例如：
There he found no less than three officials waiting to question him。在那里，他发现多达三位官员等着盘问他。
2)意为“不但是、简直” 。例如：
It is no less than robbery to ask so much. 要这么多，简直跟抢劫没什么两样。
3)意为“不比……差、与……一样”。例如：
A dolphin is no less a clever animal than a dog is. 海豚与狗同样都是聪明的动物。
5.would rather...than... 意为“宁愿……而不愿……”。例如：
He would rather listen to others than talk himself. 他宁愿听别人说也不愿意自己谈。
I would rather die than give in.我宁死不屈。
6. ...rather than ...意为“而不是”，连接两个对等成分，对等成分可以是两个形容词、名词、代词词组，动词不定式或两个动词ing形式。例如：
He went rather than stay as an unwelcome guest. 他走了而不是留下来当一个不受欢迎的客人。
He seems to be clever rather than honest. 他好像是聪明而不是诚实。
7.no sooner …than …意为“一……就……”， 前经常用过去完成时，后用一般过去时，若no sooner 在句首，用倒装语序。例如：
We had no sooner sat down than the phone rang.我们刚坐下电话铃就响了。
No sooner had we hung the picture on the wall than it fell down. 我们刚把画挂在墙上，它就掉了下来。
8.other than
1)意为“除了、除了……之外的其他”，相当于except或 in any other way than。例如：
Other woman than Sally would have said nothing. 除了萨利，别的女人什么都不会说。
How can you say that religion is anything other than a way of controlling people? 你怎么能说宗教只是一种控制人的手段呢？
2)用在否定结构里，有时译成“只（能）是……”。例如：
We were given nothing other than dry bread and water for our evening meal. 晚饭除了干面包和水外，我们一无所有。
He couldn’t feel other than surprised. 他只能感到吃惊。
9.than的特殊用法
than和more连用，可起相当于关系代词的作用。例如:
Children should not have more money than is needed. 孩子不应该有超出其需要的钱。
Tom ate more food than was good for him.汤姆吃那么多的食物对他没好处。
